Please rewind your brain
The tape was only half the story. The other half was the shelf, the cover, and the decision.

A shelf is a recommendation engine
A rental shelf placed unlikely neighbors together. A lurid horror box could sit beside a comedy you had never heard of. Picking a tape meant responding to color, typography, a strange title or the enthusiasm of a clerk. There was pleasure in committing before you knew everything.
Collect the edition, not just the title
A useful collection record notes label, territory, format, cut and condition. Two releases of the same film can contain different material. A photograph of your own copy is also more informative than an anonymous cover image: it documents the actual object you have.
Preserve without pretending
Keep tapes away from damp and heat, and avoid forcing a damaged cassette through a player. For valuable material, ask an experienced preservation specialist. Collecting is most generous when it also preserves context: where an edition came from, who released it, and what makes it distinct.
